University

While working at the University of Utah in 1989,
electrochemists Martin Fleischmann and Stanley
Pons announced their experimental achievement
of cold fusion, a phenomenon believed to be
unachievable. Although their announcement was
initially received with some acclaim, the inability
of other scientists to duplicate their results,
standard practice in the sciences, led to the term
“cold fusion” being associated with scientific
scandal.
